- BNY Mellon aims to facilitate quicker and more efficient payments using blockchain technology.
BNY Mellon’s Blockchain Integration
The Bank of New York Mellon Corp. is reportedly considering the introduction of blockchain-based tokenized deposits to its customers. This would enable clients to make payments via blockchain, aligning with the growing trend of tokenization among major global banks. If this is the case, it would signify BNY Mellon’s recognition of the increasing popularity and acceptance of Real World Asset (RWA) tokenization.
Traditional Finance (TradFi) entities are progressively adopting the technology that supports digital assets for fund transfers. BNY Mellon is the latest large financial institution to explore tokenized deposits. As early as 2023, it expressed interest in pursuing initiatives such as tokenization, the utilization of distributed ledger technology, and digital cash.
Efficient Payments and RWA Tokenization
BNY Mellon is now aiming to use blockchain technology to enable quicker and more efficient payments for its clients. Currently, the company handles as much as $2.5 trillion in daily payments, with up to $55.8 trillion in Assets Under Management (AUM).
With its reputation, BNY Mellon could potentially bring about a significant revolution in RWA tokenization. Furthermore, the shift to decentralized ledgers might allow the platform to settle transactions almost instantly and operate continuously, contrasting with traditional correspondent networks.
BNY Mellon would be joining other companies like Switzerland-based Digital Assets, Robinhood, and Gemini, all of which have already launched their tokenized stocks in various regions.
BNY Mellon’s Blockchain and Crypto Involvement
BNY Mellon has previously been heavily involved in the blockchain sector. It has ongoing working relationships with several top crypto firms, including the San Francisco-based blockchain payments company Ripple Labs Inc.
BNY Mellon is the official custodial partner for Ripple’s USD-backed stablecoin, known as RLUSD.
BNY Mellon also has investments in leading cryptocurrency projects, such as BlackRock’s iShares Bitcoin Trust ETF (IBIT) and Grayscale’s Bitcoin Trust ETF (GBTC). This latest project is part of BNY Mellon’s strategy to extend its crypto reach and modernize its infrastructure, including the scaling of real-time, instant, and cross-border payments.
In the long term, the objective is to improve overall financial transfer methods by utilizing digital assets and blockchain technology.
