Metaplanet, often referred to as Japan’s MicroStrategy, is making significant strides in its goal to accumulate a large amount of Bitcoin. The company recently announced the purchase of an additional 269.43 BTC, followed by another 68.59 BTC, purchased at a price of $96,335 per coin.
The new acquisitions bring Metaplanet’s total Bitcoin holdings to 2,100 BTC, purchased at an overall cost of $169.9 million. This means that each Bitcoin in its reserve has an average cost of $80,905.
Progress Towards 2026 Bitcoin Target
Metaplanet started its Bitcoin strategy in April of the previous year. The firm’s goal was to increase its Bitcoin holdings tenfold over the following two years. Given the current pace of acquisitions, it seems Metaplanet is on track to reach its goal.
In less than 10 months, the company has more than doubled its holdings and now owns 10% of its target. It also holds 0.01% of the total Bitcoin supply. These achievements not only demonstrate Metaplanet’s commitment to its 2026 goal, but also its belief in Bitcoin as the world’s only true hedge against inflation.
Company CEO Simon Gerovich commented on this progress, reiterating the company’s focus on the target and the importance of maximizing long-term shareholder value. Gerovich stated, “This milestone is just one step in our long-term plan to reach 10,000 BTC by the end of 2025 and 21,000 BTC by the end of 2026.”
Funding the Bitcoin Strategy
Metaplanet seems to have all the necessary strategies in place to achieve its goal. The firm recently raised $20 million in equity capital, which was made in the first two trading days of Metaplanet’s “21M Plan”. Earlier in the week, the firm also confirmed that it raised another 4 billion Japanese Yen through 0% unsecured bonds.
So far, Metaplanet’s Bitcoin holdings have yielded an impressive 18% year-to-date (YTD) return this year.
