How to Buy Solana (SOL) Safely: A Step-by-Step Guide

Four ways to buy Solana in the US, what each costs on a $500 purchase, and how to move SOL into your own wallet with a test send first.

Block Insider TeamPublished 5 November 20269 min read

Key takeaways

  • •Solana (SOL) can be bought in the US through a crypto exchange, a broker app, a spot Solana ETF, or an exchange purchase moved into a self-custody wallet.
  • •Kraken charged 1% on instant buys and 0.80% taker at Kraken Pro's lowest tier in November 2026, so $500 of SOL cost $5 or $4 in trading fees.
  • •A spot Solana ETF gives price exposure without withdrawable SOL; Grayscale's GSOL charged a 0.19% management fee, or $0.95 a year on $500, in November 2026.
  • •A new Solana address needs at least 890,880 lamports, about 0.00089 SOL, under Solana's account minimum formula, so a 0.01 SOL test send clears it easily.
  • •Crypto held through Robinhood Crypto is not FDIC insured or SIPC protected, according to Robinhood's own order routing disclosure, even though the same app also holds stock accounts.

Buying Solana means trading dollars for SOL, the token that pays every fee on the Solana network. Working out how to buy Solana comes down to four routes: a crypto exchange, a broker app, a spot Solana ETF, or an exchange purchase moved into your own wallet. The real choice is whether you want the token itself or only its price.

Solana (SOL), the seventh-largest cryptocurrency by market value, traded at $95.84 when CoinGecko's Solana page was retrieved at about 08:45 UTC on 5 November 2026. The same page puts its all-time high at $293.31, leaving SOL 67.3% below that peak. At that price, $500 divided by $95.84 buys 5.217 SOL before fees.

What Are You Buying When You Buy SOL?

You are buying the native token of Solana, a blockchain built for fast, low-cost payments and apps. "Every Solana transaction requires a fee paid in SOL," according to Solana's fee documentation. SOL is the network's fuel as well as an asset, tracked on our Solana price page.

A lamport, the smallest unit, is worth 0.000000001 SOL according to Solana's terminology page. The base fee is 5,000 lamports per signature, or 0.000005 SOL, which is about $0.0005 at $95.84. Half of it is burned and half goes to the validator, the computer that checks and records the transaction. An optional priority fee, paid when the network is busy, goes entirely to the validator.

Every Solana account must also hold a minimum balance to stay open. Solana's account documentation sets it as account size plus 128 bytes, times 3,480 lamports per byte-year, times two years. A basic wallet stores no extra data, so 128 times 3,480 times 2 gives 890,880 lamports. That is 0.00089 SOL, roughly $0.085, and a first send below it to a new address fails.

Before You Buy: What You Need

Knowing how to buy Solana safely starts with four things settled before any money moves.

  • A verified account. Exchanges and broker apps check your identity before the first purchase.
  • A bank transfer route. "At this time, credit cards cannot be used to purchase Solana," according to Coinbase's Solana buying page.
  • A custody decision. Decide whether SOL stays with the platform or moves to a wallet you control. An ETF settles this for you, because the fund holds the coins.
  • A record of every buy. The IRS says "the basis of a digital asset is the cost in U.S. dollars," so save each purchase date and dollar cost.

Four Ways to Buy Solana, Compared

The four answers to how to buy Solana differ most on who holds the keys.

Crypto exchange (Kraken, Coinbase)

  • Who holds the SOL: the exchange, until you withdraw.
  • Trading cost: Kraken charges 1% on instant buys, and 0.40% maker or 0.80% taker at Kraken Pro's lowest tier. Coinbase shows its fee in the trade preview.
  • Can you move the SOL: yes. Kraken says Solana withdrawals run "at near-instant speeds."
  • Main drawback: a spread sits inside the quote, and Kraken "may retain any excess spread from a transaction." Accounts can be frozen, and you carry the company's solvency risk.

Broker app (Robinhood)

  • Who holds the SOL: Robinhood Crypto.
  • Trading cost: no separate commission on default orders. Robinhood's own example shows a 0.96% buy spread on $100, of which it receives $0.95 from its market maker.
  • Can you move the SOL: only if the app lists SOL transfers for your account, so check first.
  • Main drawback: "Cryptocurrency held through Robinhood Crypto is not FDIC insured or SIPC protected," its disclosure says.

Spot Solana ETF (Grayscale GSOL, Fidelity FSOL)

  • Who holds the SOL: the fund's custodian, which for GSOL is Coinbase Custody Trust Company.
  • Trading cost: GSOL charges a 0.19% management fee, according to Grayscale's fund page. FSOL's fee sits in its prospectus. Brokers may add a commission.
  • Can you move the SOL: no. You own fund shares.
  • Main drawback: "An investment in GSOL is not a direct investment in Solana," Grayscale states.

Exchange purchase moved to your own wallet

  • Who holds the SOL: you, through a seed phrase.
  • Trading cost: the exchange fee, any withdrawal fee on its screen, and 0.000005 SOL per later send.
  • Can you move the SOL: yes, any time.
  • Main drawback: no help desk can restore lost keys, and every approval you sign is final.

How to Buy Solana on an Exchange, Step by Step

Anyone asking how to buy Solana they can move later needs the exchange route, which takes six steps.

  1. Open and verify the account. Send no money until approval clears.
  2. Fund it by bank transfer. Kraken says extra fees "may apply depending on your chosen payment method," so compare them on the deposit screen.
  3. Check the fee before confirming. A $500 instant buy on Kraken costs $5 at 1%. The same order at market on Kraken Pro costs $4 at the 0.80% taker rate.
  4. Set up your wallet and copy its address. Write the recovery words on paper first.
  5. Send a test amount. Withdraw 0.01 SOL, about $0.96, on the Solana network. That clears the 0.00089 SOL account minimum more than 11 times over.
  6. Send the rest. Compare the first and last six characters of the pasted address with the wallet, then confirm.

Solana-Native or Multi-Chain Wallet?

A Solana-native wallet is built for one network, while a multi-chain wallet keeps SOL beside Ether and other assets in one app. A wallet here means software holding the private keys that prove you control an address. Native wallets rarely ask which network you mean but cannot hold your Bitcoin. Multi-chain wallets ask you to pick a network on many sends, which is where wrong-network mistakes start. Our self-custody wallet guide covers setup.

Either way, a Solana wallet is only as safe as its seed phrase, the recovery words that rebuild it on any device. "Your seed phrase is the most important thing to protect," Solana's safety guide says. Treat it like the master key to a safe-deposit box: whoever holds it can empty the box without touching your phone.

What $500 of SOL Costs on Each Route

Fees matter less than custody when you weigh how to buy Solana. At the 5 November 2026 price of $95.84, the trading routes land within about $1 of each other on $500, before spreads.

  • Kraken instant buy: $500 times 1% is $5.00, leaving $495, which buys 5.165 SOL.
  • Kraken Pro market order: $500 times 0.80% is $4.00, leaving $496, or 5.175 SOL. A limit order filled at the 0.40% maker rate costs $2.00.
  • Robinhood at a 0.96% spread: $4.80 goes to the spread, leaving $495.20, or 5.167 SOL.
  • GSOL: 0.19% a year on $500 is $0.95 a year.

Grayscale listed GSOL's gross staking rewards at 4.28% and net rewards at 3.97% as of 3 November 2026. On $500 for a year, that is $21.40 gross against $19.85 net, so $1.55 goes to costs. Grayscale says the rewards are not issued directly to investors and warns they "may be zero."

What Can Go Wrong When You Buy SOL

Price is the largest risk: "Digital assets are highly volatile, and their market movements are very difficult to predict," Fidelity writes on its Solana fund page. Learning how to buy Solana also means learning how buyers lose it. Picking the wrong network on a withdrawal screen can send SOL where the receiving wallet cannot see it. Clipboard malware can swap a copied address for an attacker's. A test send catches most of these for under a dollar.

Most theft starts with a person, not a bug. Fake support agents ask for recovery words, which no legitimate service needs. Platforms can also freeze accounts or fail. Staking adds slashing, where a validator that breaks network rules loses part of its stake. Fidelity notes that staking "comes with a risk of loss."

Is Buying Solana Legal, and When Does Tax Apply?

Yes, buying SOL is legal in the United States. On 17 September 2025, the SEC approved rules "to adopt generic listing standards for exchange-traded products that hold spot commodities, including digital assets," according to SEC press release 2025-121. Anyone weighing where to buy Solana through a brokerage now has funds such as Grayscale's GSOL, which listed on 29 October 2025, according to its fund page.

Tax arrives when you dispose of SOL. "If you have digital asset transactions, you must report them whether or not they result in a taxable gain or loss," according to the IRS digital assets page. Selling SOL for dollars counts as a sale on that page's list. Your gain is the sale price minus the dollar cost you recorded.

Which Route Fits Which Buyer

The right answer to how to buy Solana depends on what you plan to do with the coins. A first $200 held to watch the price fits a broker app or an exchange's simple buy screen. Using Solana apps needs the exchange route and a wallet. A brokerage account with no keys to lose points to a spot ETF. Anyone chasing yield should compare staking SOL directly with GSOL's 3.97% net figure.

Frequently asked questions

Can I buy Solana with a credit card?

+

Not on Coinbase. Its Solana buying page says "At this time, credit cards cannot be used to purchase Solana." Kraken accepts several payment methods but says additional fees may apply depending on the method chosen, including cards. A bank transfer is the simplest way to fund a SOL purchase on either platform, and the fee for each method appears before you confirm.

What is the smallest amount of SOL I can buy?

+

SOL divides into lamports, each worth 0.000000001 SOL according to Solana's terminology page, so the token itself has almost no practical minimum. Platforms set their own floors. Kraken charges up to $2 instead of its 1% fee on small instant trades, and a fixed 3% applies when converting amounts below its minimum order size, according to its fee schedule.

Do Solana ETFs pay staking rewards?

+

Some stake the SOL they hold, but the rewards do not reach investors as direct payments. Grayscale's GSOL page showed 100% of its SOL staked as of 3 November 2026 and says rewards are not issued directly to investors. Fidelity says FSOL "participates in staking activity and expects to receive staking rewards as a result." Each fund's documents explain how any staking income reaches holders.

How long does a SOL withdrawal from an exchange take?

+

Kraken says deposits and withdrawals on the Solana network run "at near-instant speeds." The network cost is small: a base fee of 5,000 lamports, or 0.000005 SOL, per signature, according to Solana's fee documentation. Any longer wait comes from the platform's own checks, so a 0.01 SOL test send shows the real timing before you move a larger amount.

What is a priority fee on Solana?

+

A priority fee is an optional extra payment that moves a transaction up the queue when the network is busy. Solana's fee documentation sets it as the compute unit price times the compute unit limit, divided by 1,000,000, in lamports. The default price is zero, so most wallet sends pay only the base fee. The whole priority fee goes to the validator and none of it is burned.
