Quick Take:

  • Bitcoin (BTC) traded near $78,000 on Wednesday, 10 September, holding its uptrend even as the broader crypto market fell 4.27% in 24 hours.
  • Bitcoin ETF netflows over the past 30 days total +$21.9 billion, per CryptoQuant's flow tracking, with price now above the ETF cohort's $72,000-$73,000 average cost basis.
  • CryptoQuant's own caveat: close to 90% of that 30-day figure came from just five days in mid-August, so the headline number can fall sharply as those days roll out of the window.
  • On-chain demand data shows sell-side pressure fading through progressively shallower contractions, though buying strength has only recovered to 2024-rebound levels so far.

Bitcoin traded near $77,000 on Thursday, 10 September, according to price data from CoinGecko, and the way it got there matters more than the number. The broader crypto market shed 4.27% over 24 hours while Bitcoin barely moved, pushing BTC dominance up to 58.57%. On a relatively red day, capital rotated toward Bitcoin rather than away from it, and fresh exchange-traded fund (ETF) data suggests why.

ETF Buyers Are Back in Profit, and Back in Size

Bitcoin's ETF demand picture has flipped, according to on-chain analytics firm CryptoQuant. Its tracking puts 30-day ETF netflows at +$21.9 billion, with the shift concentrated in mid-August: between 17 and 21 August alone, netflows totaled roughly +$19.6 billion by the firm's measure, the same window in which BTC ran from the low $60,000s toward $80,000.

Two supporting readings round out the picture. CryptoQuant's ETF MVRV ratio, which compares price against the average cost basis of ETF-held coins, now sits around 1.07, meaning the average ETF-held Bitcoin carries roughly 7% in unrealized profit.

That cost basis sits at $72,000-$73,000, and price reclaiming it is what separates holders in profit from holders underwater. Meanwhile, the Coinbase Premium's 30-day average, a gauge of US buying pressure, has recovered from around -$100 to roughly +$30, per the same data.

CryptoQuant flagged the caveat itself, and it deserves equal billing: close to 90% of the +$21.9 billion figure came from those five August days. As they roll out of the rolling 30-day window over the coming sessions, the headline number can fall sharply even if nobody sells anything. The signal worth tracking from here is fresh daily flows, not the decaying 30-day sum.

Bitcoin Price Analysis: Demand Is Healing, Not Yet Strong

The on-chain demand picture tells a story consistent with the flows, with the same restraint. CryptoQuant data on Apparent Demand, which measures whether new Bitcoin supply is being absorbed by the market, shows the most constructive development on the negative side of the ledger. Since the deep contraction of May and June, each successive negative-demand trough has been shallower than the last.

In plain terms, every wave of selling pressure is destroying less demand than the one before it, a higher-low structure typical of a market exiting a bearish regime, per the CryptoQuant analysis.

The other half of the signal is less finished. Positive demand has recovered, but only to levels comparable with the 2024 rebounds, which the analysis describes as improving yet still lacking the strength required for a decisive expansion. Demand is stabilizing. However, the conviction has not arrived.

The technical map agrees on where the test sits. BTC holds above its 20-day, 50-day, and 200-day exponential moving averages, with the 50-day near $72,759 and the 200-day near $72,302, both clustered almost exactly on the ETF cohort's $72,000-$73,000 cost basis.

Momentum is cooling, with the daily MACD printing a bearish crossover, and the Fear and Greed Index reading 69 despite the red tape. Around the majors, Ethereum traded near $2,474 and Solana near $102, both softer on the day, with the Federal Reserve's 16 September meeting the next macro event on the calendar.

The Level That Decides the Next Move

No price target survives contact with this setup, honestly, but the framework does. As long as Bitcoin holds above the $72,000-$73,000 zone, where the ETF cost basis and the major moving averages now overlap, while fresh ETF flows and the Coinbase premium stay positive, the move reads as institutional reaccumulation, and dips toward that zone could keep finding buyers defending their own cost basis.

Lose the zone, and the same holders flip underwater. The higher-low demand structure comes into question, and the signal weakens materially, by CryptoQuant's own framing. With the mid-August flow surge about to roll out of the 30-day window and the Fed decision six days away, the market will not have to wait long to learn which side of $72,000 it actually lives on.
