Bitcoin hit an eight-month high above $85,000 as Ethereum accumulation on Binance reached a three-year high and Bitmine neared 6 million ETH.

Bitcoin is experiencing its best run in eight months. However, Ethereum is quietly doing the more interesting thing. BTC surged to $85,134 on Monday 21 September, its highest level since January, as per Yahoo Finance data, after reclaiming $80,000 late last week.
That move landed just days after the Senate blocked the CLARITY Act and the Federal Reserve raised rates for the first time since 2023. Bitcoin had been trading near $76,000 on the day of the hike.
What changed was a combination of falling oil prices, a strong weekly close, and short sellers caught on the wrong side as prices turned, according to Yahoo Finance.
Underneath that recovery, though, the stronger structural signal is on Ethereum.
ETH has quietly outperformed. The token has gone from $1,510 to $2,650 in three months, a gain of more than 75%, according to CryptoQuant analyst Darkfost.
That move matters because of where it landed. ETH cleared its April high, breaking the downtrend that had defined its year. Bitcoin, by comparison, has yet to establish itself durably above its May high, which gives ETH the lead for now.
The fuel has been accumulation. The monthly average of ETH withdrawal transactions from Binance has passed 90,000, the highest level since 2023 and double the reading at the start of the year, according to CryptoQuant data.

When ETH leaves an exchange at that pace, it usually means investors are buying and moving coins into private custody, meaning wallets they control rather than accounts on a trading platform. That is how holders behave when they plan to keep an asset for months or years, not days. According to market analyst Darkfost,
"It highlights just how significant, and fairly sudden, this accumulation has been."
Coins sitting in private wallets are also coins that are not immediately available to sell. A shrinking exchange supply does not guarantee higher prices, but it removes one of the easier sources of selling pressure when the market wobbles.
The accumulation story is not only retail. Bitmine (BMNR), the largest Ethereum treasury company, bought another 27,562 ETH over the past week, according to the company's announcement.
As of 20 September, Bitmine held 5,983,940 ETH. That is about 4.9% of all ETH in existence, and roughly 98% of the way to its stated goal of owning 5% of total supply.
Most of that position is working rather than idle. Of its holdings, 5,067,309 ETH are staked, valued at about $13.6 billion at $2,688 per ETH. Staking means locking ETH to help secure the Ethereum network in exchange for rewards, so Bitmine earns yield on the bulk of its treasury.
Across crypto, cash, marketable securities and other investments, the company's holdings total about $17.1 billion, including $714 million in cash and marketable securities.
The number worth watching is the remaining 2%. At its recent weekly pace, Bitmine is close enough to its 5% target that the question shifts from how much it buys to what it does once it gets there. A treasury buyer that has been absorbing tens of thousands of ETH a week becomes a much smaller source of demand once it is full.
ETH traded at $2,724.95 on 22 September 2026, up 5.90% over 24 hours and 7.60% over the week, with a market capitalization of about $332.6 billion, according to CoinGecko.
The level that matters most is the one it just broke. The $2,650 area, which marked the top of the three-month rally and sits close to Monday's opening price of $2,644.80, now acts as the first support. Holding above it keeps the breakout intact and the accumulation thesis on track.
Above, $3,000 is the next psychological level and the clearest test of whether the rally has depth beyond short covering. ETH would need a further gain of about 10% to reach it.
A clean close back below $2,650 would be the warning sign. It would suggest the breakout was driven more by positioning than by the buying the exchange data points to.
It is worth keeping the wider picture in view. ETH still trades about 41% below where it was a year ago, and roughly 45% under its August 2025 record of $4,953.73. The recovery is real, but it starts from a deep drawdown.
The next macro test arrives on 7 October, when minutes from last week's Fed meeting show how firmly the committee is behind a second rate hike. Until then, the signal to track is simple: if Binance withdrawals stay elevated while ETH holds $2,650, the accumulation is doing what the data says it is.
