Key Highlights:
- Wells Fargo will roll out tokenized deposits this fall, starting with U.S. dollar and British pound transactions.
- The service will let corporate clients move money 24/7 while keeping funds inside the regulated banking system.
- The launch puts Wells Fargo alongside JPMorgan and Citi in the race to modernize cross-border payments.
The U.S. banking giant Wells Fargo has announced it will launch tokenized deposits for corporate and commercial clients later this year, allowing businesses to send money across borders 24 hours a day, seven days a week without moving funds outside the traditional banking system.
The rollout comes as major banks race to modernize payments using blockchain technology.
Wells Fargo Begins Rollout With USD and GBP Payments
On 4 August, Wells Fargo said the first phase of the service will launch this fall, supporting cross-border payments between the U.S. dollar (USD) and the British pound (GBP). The bank plans to gradually expand the platform throughout 2027, adding more clients, countries, and currencies based on demand.
The system runs on Wells Fargo's own blockchain network and works behind the scenes. Clients will continue using the bank's existing payment platform, while eligible transactions will automatically be processed through tokenized deposits whenever they offer faster settlement.
Chief Financial Officer Mike Santomassimo said that,
"Tokenized deposits will enable Wells Fargo's corporate and commercial clients to move money between accounts and across borders with greater ease and increased speed.”
What Are Wells Fargo's Tokenized Deposits?
Unlike stablecoins, tokenized deposits are simply digital versions of bank deposits that remain inside the regulated banking system.
That means businesses receive the speed of blockchain while keeping the same banking protections, including regulatory oversight and eligibility for deposit insurance.
The platform also introduces programmable payments, allowing companies to automate transactions using smart contracts. For example, payments can be released automatically once goods are delivered or other business conditions are met.
Another major benefit is 24/7 settlement. Companies will no longer need to wait for banking hours, wire cut-off times, weekends, or holidays to move money between subsidiaries, suppliers, or business partners.
Why Banks Are Investing in Tokenized Deposits
Banks are quickly adopting tokenization as businesses look for faster and cheaper ways to send money across borders. Traditional international payments often take hours or even days because they pass through several banks.
Blockchain allows banks to settle transactions almost instantly while keeping customer funds inside regulated financial institutions.
The move also comes as stablecoins gain wider use. Instead of losing payment activity to crypto firms, banks are launching their own blockchain based solutions.
Tokenized real world assets (RWAs) on public blockchains are now worth $37.38 billion, while the broader tokenized asset market, including institutional products, has reached $419.71 billion.
How Wells Fargo Compares With JPMorgan and Citi
Wells Fargo is entering a market where some competitors already have a head start. JPMorgan's Kinexys, formerly known as JPM Coin, is currently the largest tokenized deposit platform. It now processes more than $5 billion in daily transactions, up from around $1 billion in late 2023. The network has also surpassed $1.5 trillion in total settlement volume.
Meanwhile, Citi Token Services has focused on helping corporate and institutional clients move money globally through blockchain-powered treasury services.
Unlike those platforms, Wells Fargo is fully integrating tokenized deposits into its existing commercial banking system. Customers won't need new wallets or separate blockchain accounts, making adoption easier for businesses already banking with Wells Fargo.
Corporate Clients Stand to Benefit
For businesses, the biggest advantage is speed.
Companies will be able to transfer money instantly between global offices, suppliers, and partners without waiting for traditional banking hours. Faster settlement also improves cash management by giving businesses quicker access to working capital.
Automation is another major benefit. Smart contracts can trigger payments automatically once agreed conditions are met, reducing paperwork and manual processing.
Those improvements matter as companies increasingly operate across multiple countries and time zones.
