Why Tokenization Could Outlast Every Crypto Hype Cycle
Tokenization is quietly bringing Wall Street on-chain, with billions of dollars in U.S. Treasuries and institutional funds finding a home on blockchain networks. As major financial firms expand their digital asset offerings, the trend points to a future driven less by crypto speculation and more by the infrastructure of traditional finance.
BlackRock and other major institutions are promoting tokenization of assets that can be used as collateral inside existing Wall Street infrastructure.
The emphasis is on building out the infrastructure rather than focusing on near- term price narratives.
Looks like it will be much broader than just crypto-native assets. Touches on Treasuries, money-market funds, equities, and other assets which are already held by institutional investors.
Multiple catalysts should be catalysts for a multi-year bull market, not just a froth-fueled cycle
A wave of recent announcements shows tokenization moving from crypto buzz to Wall Street boardrooms. BlackRock, JP Morgan and The Clearing House are rolling out blockchain-based funds and deposit networks designed for 24/7 settlement and collateral use.
This institutional momentum – not mere price speculation – suggests tokenization may be a multi-year structural shift, not just another boom‑and‑bust crypto cycle.
Institutional On-Chain Money
On August 4, 2026, BlackRock launched “on-chain” share classes for its Institutional Cash Series money-market funds in Europe. These tokenized fund shares are minted on Ethereum, giving approved investors digital wallets that hold tokens representing traditional fund shares.
The promised benefits include 24/7 peer-to-peer transfers and real-time visibility of holdings – meaning firms can move cash instantly, day or night, without waiting for next-day bank settlement. BlackRock itself notes that “tokenized money market funds allow us to bring high-quality, short-duration investment exposures into digital formats, while maintaining capital preservation, liquidity, and risk management.”
Meanwhile, major U.S. banks are doing the same with deposits. In September 2026, The Clearing House selected Quant to build an on-chain payments network, backed by 25 of America’s largest banks. Its goal is a shared ledger where tokenized bank deposits can clear and settle automatically.
Tokenized deposits “move automatically within rules institutions set in advance,” TCH explains, meaning corporate treasury payments and liquidity management can run around the clock. In practice, this reduces “manual work and delays” for banks and firms, since money can flow at machine speed without human intervention.
These developments mean tokenized funds are being built to serve as usable collateral inside existing systems. JP Morgan’s Kinexys platform underpins BlackRock’s fund tokens, and it likewise promises digital collateral usage and instant swaps between wallets.
In short, the era of “instant money” on blockchains is arriving: traded funds and deposits can hop on and off the blockchain in seconds, integrating with Treasury and liquidity management functions.
Tokenization Beyond Crypto Assets
Tokenization isn’t limited to crypto coins. Real-world assets – government bonds, cash funds, equities – are rapidly joining the chain. RWA.xyz estimates that around $39 billion in real-world assets is now tokenized on blockchain networks, including approximately $16.2 billion in the U.S. Treasury funds.

Securitize leads the market with nearly $5 billion in tokenized assets, including BlackRock’s BUIDL fund and other institutional credit and equity products. Ondo, Circle, Franklin Templeton’s BENJI money-market fund, Spiko, and other platforms are also building substantial on-chain portfolios, each managing billions of dollars in assets.
In practical terms, anything from dollar cash and Treasuries to private equity and money-market funds can be issued as tokens.
The Solana Foundation notes that “hundreds of billions in real-world assets have traded across Solana in the past year,” from tokenized treasuries to corporate credit. Even stock exchanges are experimenting: NYSE, DTCC, and LSE are exploring on-chain equity settlement.
With dozens of traditional asset classes tokenized, this movement transcends any single crypto price cycle. The real story is infrastructure. Rather than chasing daily price swings, tokenization efforts focus on building robust rails.
Stablecoins are one pillar: they have already proven that dollars can move on-chain globally at scale. For example, more than $4.7 trillion in stablecoins flowed over the Solana network last year, showing that large payments can clear on blockchains.
Financial institutions are linking these rails to legacy finance: Visa now uses blockchain for USDC settlement, PayPal and Western Union are bringing stablecoin payments onchain, and JPMorgan’s On-Chain Money initiative will connect to existing RTP and CHIPS systems.
A Durable Shift, Not Just a Bubble
All these factors – regulatory clarity, institutional pilots, stablecoin rails, blockchain tech and AI – suggest tokenization is not just another bubble waiting to burst. It resembles a “supercycle” of financial infrastructure akin to past transformations (including electronic trading, digital finance).
Dozens of global banks and asset managers now see tokenization as a strategic priority, driven by actual business use-cases (faster Treasury operations, on-chain collateral, fractional ownership) and not just speculative crypto bets.
Cryptocurrency hype cycles are always short-lived. But tokenization ties blockchain tech to the core plumbing of finance. When major fund groups issue tokenized shares of money funds, and clearinghouses build interoperable deposit ledgers, they’re shaping systems that run 24/7 on distributed networks.
These changes lower friction in trading, settlement, and lending across all asset classes. In short, tokenization is becoming part of the institutional landscape. Its gains – instant settlement, programmable collateral, and broader access – are based on concrete savings and capabilities.
That means tokenization may outlast the hype, establishing a new foundation for global markets rather than merely fueling the next crypto bull run.
