Key Points
- US Vice President Kamala Harris allegedly referred to Bitcoin as “money for criminals”.
- Contrary to hopes, Harris is reportedly not planning to attend the Bitcoin Conference.
Rumors were circulating earlier this week that US Vice President Kamala Harris would be a speaker at the Bitcoin Conference.
The crypto community was tentatively excited, hoping this might be a sign of Democrats warming up to cryptocurrencies.
Harris’s Stance on Bitcoin
However, recent developments have quashed these hopes. David Bailey, CEO of Bitcoin Magazine, made a post where he accused Harris of privately labeling Bitcoin as “money for criminals”.
Bailey suggested that Harris and other members of President Joe Biden’s administration have consistently undermined the crypto industry over the past four years. He argues that their current attempts to appear crypto-friendly are insincere.
Bailey’s comments come in response to the news that Harris will not be attending the upcoming Bitcoin Conference. Bailey alleges that Harris’ campaign was trying to ensure she would speak at the conference, even reportedly reaching out to billionaire Mark Cuban for crypto advice.
Bailey believes that Harris’ absence from the conference confirms the current administration’s reluctance to soften its stance on crypto, particularly regarding regulatory approaches.
Interestingly, Harris has yet to make any significant public statements about crypto during her political career, making it difficult to ascertain her personal views on the matter.
The Relationship Between Crypto and US Politics
On the other hand, Republican nominee Donald Trump has openly embraced cryptocurrencies. He continues to foster a relationship with the crypto community and has been vocal in his support. Trump is confirmed to attend the Bitcoin Conference in Nashville this week, along with other notable figures like Cathie Wood, Michael Saylor, and Robert F. Kennedy Jr.
