Key takeaways
- Kraken charges 1% on instant ETH buys and 0.40% to 0.80% on Kraken Pro's entry tier, so the order screen can cut the fee on $1,000 from $10 to $4.
- Buying ETH with US dollars and holding it does not trigger tax, and the IRS tells filers who only bought with dollars to answer No on the digital asset question.
- Spot ether ETFs, cleared by the SEC on 23 May 2024, charge 0.15% to 0.25% a year, but holders own fund shares and can never withdraw the ether itself.
- Crypto held at exchanges and broker apps generally sits outside SIPC protection, which an SEC investor bulletin says excludes most types of crypto assets.
- MetaMask takes a 1% fee on every in-wallet purchase on top of the provider's fee and gas, and says it cannot recover a wallet whose recovery phrase is lost.
Ether (ETH) is the coin that pays for every transaction on the Ethereum network, and buying it means swapping dollars for it on a platform that decides who holds the coins afterward. Learning how to buy Ethereum comes down to four routes: a crypto exchange, a broker app, a spot ether exchange-traded fund (ETF), or a self-custody wallet with a built-in on-ramp. So which route costs least while still leaving you in control?
Ether traded at $2,400.09 at 08:09 UTC on 23 October 2026, according to data from CoinGecko, which ranks it the second-largest cryptocurrency by market value. CoinGecko records its all-time high as $4,946.05 on 24 August 2025, so ether sat about 51% below its peak. At $2,400.09, $1,000 buys roughly 0.4166 ETH.
This guide shows how to buy Ethereum on each route, then works out what a $1,000 purchase costs on every one of them.
What Do You Actually Own When You Buy Ethereum?
That depends on the route. Custody is the term that decides it: who controls the private key, the secret code that authorizes spending from a crypto address. On an exchange or a broker app, the platform holds the key and your account shows a balance. That balance works like a casino chip, standing for value the house keeps until it lets you cash out to your own wallet.
A self-custody wallet gives you the key directly. An ETF is a fund you buy like a stock, and a spot ether ETF holds real ether through a custodian while you own fund shares. Grayscale says as much in a fact sheet for its ETH fund filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC): the product "is not a direct investment in Ether."
Before You Buy Ethereum: What You Need Ready
You do not need to buy a whole coin. Kraken's support pages set its minimum ETH order at 0.01 ETH, which came to $24.00 at the CoinGecko price above. Expect an identity check with a photo ID, and note that Robinhood says the verification enabling crypto transfers "may take up to 5 business days."
A US bank account gives the cheapest funding, and your state matters. Kraken's support pages say bank funding through its payment partners is not available in Texas, New York and Maine. If you plan to hold the coins yourself, set up the wallet first and write its seed phrase, the 12 or 24 words that can rebuild it on any device, on paper.
Four Ways to Buy Ethereum in 2026, Compared
Each route is priced on a $1,000 purchase, using the platforms' fee pages and the issuers' fund pages as retrieved on 23 October 2026.
Crypto exchange (Coinbase, Kraken)
- Who holds the keys: the exchange, until you withdraw.
- Cost on $1,000: $10 plus the spread on a Kraken instant buy, or $4 to $8 on Kraken Pro's entry tier.
- Can you move the ETH out: yes, after a network fee.
- Main drawback: both exchanges say they may keep "any excess spread."
Broker app (Robinhood)
- Who holds the keys: Robinhood Crypto, LLC.
- Cost on $1,000: no separate commission on default routing, but Robinhood Crypto receives $9.50 of the spread from its market maker.
- Can you move the ETH out: yes, within limits that vary by account activity.
- Main drawback: the cost sits inside the quoted price.
Spot ether ETF (Grayscale, BlackRock)
- Who holds the keys: the fund's custodian, Coinbase Custody for Grayscale.
- Cost on $1,000: $1.50 a year at Grayscale's 0.15% fee, or $2.50 at BlackRock's 0.25%.
- Can you move the ETH out: no, you own shares.
- Main drawback: you can never send or spend the ether yourself.
Self-custody wallet on-ramp (MetaMask)
- Who holds the keys: you.
- Cost on $1,000: a $10 MetaMask fee plus the payment provider's fee and gas.
- Can you move the ETH out: it is already in your wallet.
- Main drawback: MetaMask cannot recover a wallet whose phrase is lost.
How to Buy Ethereum on an Exchange, Step by Step
The exchange route has the most steps, and this sequence works on Coinbase and Kraken alike.
- Check your state. Kraken's licensing page, updated 30 September 2026, lists states where transfers are unavailable, with Indiana blocked for both crypto and bank transfers.
- Open the account and verify your identity. Wait for approval before you deposit anything.
- Turn on two-factor authentication. An authenticator app is safer than a text-message code, which someone who takes over your phone number can intercept.
- Fund it by bank transfer. Kraken says card, Apple Pay, Google Pay and ACH payments can carry extra fees, so compare methods on the funding screen.
- Pick the order screen. A limit order on Kraken Pro pays the 0.40% maker rate, while the instant buy button costs 1% plus the spread.
- Read the total before you confirm. Coinbase says "All fees are disclosed at the time of the transaction."
- Send a small test amount to your own wallet. Move the rest only once it arrives.
What Does a $1,000 Ethereum Purchase Really Cost?
The order screen matters more than the platform name. Kraken's instant buy fee of 1% is $10 on $1,000 before the spread, while a Kraken Pro limit order at the 0.40% maker rate costs $4, according to Kraken's fee schedule. The $6 gap comes before any spread. Coinbase's disclosures say it "may also charge a 1.875% Coinbase fee (varies by payment method)," which comes to $18.75 where it applies.
Robinhood's disclosure, dated 15 June 2026, says Robinhood Crypto receives $0.95 for every $100 routed to its market maker, or $9.50 on $1,000. Its own example uses a 0.96% buy spread, which on $1,000 would be $9.60.
ETF fees run yearly instead. Grayscale's 0.15% costs $1.50 a year, so a holding that stays at $1,000 pays $7.50 over five years. BlackRock's 0.25% sponsor fee on its iShares Ethereum Trust costs $2.50 a year, or $12.50 over the same five years. That is cheap ownership, paid for by giving up the right to withdraw.
Why Send a Test Transaction Before Moving It All?
Because an Ethereum transfer cannot be reversed, and a test costs almost nothing. Gas measures the work a transaction asks of the network, and a plain ETH transfer uses 21,000 units, according to ethereum.org's developer documentation. Gas is priced in gwei, a billionth of one ETH.
Etherscan's gas tracker showed an average of 0.051 gwei at 09:07 UTC on 23 October 2026. Multiply 21,000 by 0.051 gwei and you get 0.000001071 ETH, about a quarter of a cent at $2,400.09. Etherscan's snapshot from 22 October 2026 averaged about 1.92 gwei, which puts the same transfer near 10 cents. An exchange withdrawal costs more, because the exchange sets the fee: Coinbase charges one "based on our estimate of the prevailing network fees."
Is Buying Ethereum a Taxable Event in the US?
No, buying ETH with dollars and holding it does not create tax on its own. The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) tells filers to answer "No" to the digital asset question if "You only purchased digital assets (with U.S. or other real currency) or only held them in a wallet or account," according to its digital asset guidance.
Keep the receipt anyway. The IRS says your basis "includes the amount you paid in cash for the digital assets plus the amount you paid for transaction services," so the fees above reduce your taxable gain when you later sell. Our guide to crypto taxes covers that step. On the legal side, the SEC approved the rule changes that let spot ether ETFs list on 23 May 2024, in Release No. 34-100224, and BlackRock's fund page dates its launch to 23 July 2024.
Where Ethereum Buyers Actually Lose Money
The largest losses come from fraud. The Federal Bureau of Investigation's 2025 Internet Crime Report says cryptocurrency investment fraud was "the highest source of financial losses to Americans in 2025 with $7.2 billion reported in losses." Anyone who asks for your recovery phrase is attempting theft, whatever they claim to be. Ethereum.org's security page puts the rule in one line: "Never, for any reason, share your recovery phrase or private keys!"
Self-custody adds its own failure mode, because MetaMask says "Not even the team at MetaMask can help you recover your wallet" once the phrase is lost. Platform balances carry a different risk. An SEC investor bulletin on Securities Investor Protection Corporation coverage, known as SIPC protection, says protected securities exclude "most types of crypto assets." Robinhood says crypto held through Robinhood Crypto "is not FDIC insured or SIPC protected," so neither bank deposit insurance nor SIPC covers those coins if the company fails.
Which Route Should You Use to Buy Ethereum?
Someone who wants ETH exposure in a retirement or brokerage account, and never wants to manage a key, belongs in a spot ether ETF. Someone buying $100 a month does better with limit orders on an exchange's pro screen, where the fee gap adds up over a year. A Robinhood user can buy there and move a long-term holding to a personal wallet as it grows. Anyone who wants to use ETH in Ethereum apps needs the wallet route and should treat the 1% fee as the cost of skipping the exchange.

Frequently asked questions
Can I buy less than one ETH?
Yes. Ether divides into very small fractions, so you can buy a dollar amount and receive whatever share of a coin it covers. Kraken sets its minimum ETH order at 0.01 ETH, according to its support pages, and other platforms show their own minimums on the order screen. A small purchase still pays the same percentage fee, so check the total before you confirm.
How long before I can move ETH out of Robinhood?
Robinhood says the verification that enables crypto transfers may take up to five business days. After that, customers can send coins to an external self-custody wallet, and Robinhood estimates the network fee and adds it to the amount sent. Withdrawal limits vary with recent account activity and verification level, so a new account may not be able to move a large balance straight away.
Does Coinbase One remove trading fees on ETH?
Coinbase describes Coinbase One as a subscription product that offers zero trading fees when members buy and sell crypto, with certain limitations. Read those limitations before subscribing, since Coinbase's fee disclosures also say it may retain any excess spread on a trade. A buyer making one purchase a year gains little from a subscription built for regular trading.
Do spot ether ETFs pay staking rewards?
Some do. Grayscale's two ether funds, ETHE and ETH, became the first US-listed spot crypto products to enable staking in October 2025, according to a Grayscale filing with the SEC. BlackRock runs a separate iShares Staked Ethereum Trust with a 0.25% sponsor fee. Staking means locking ether to help secure the network in return for new ether, so check each fund's page for how much reaches shareholders.
What is the difference between a market order and a limit order?
A market order buys at the best available price straight away, so it takes liquidity from the order book and pays the taker fee. A limit order sets your price and waits until someone matches it, so it adds liquidity and pays the lower maker fee. On Kraken Pro's entry tier those rates are 0.80% and 0.40%, according to Kraken's fee schedule.
