Bitcoin Price Drops 7% as US Government Moves $1.44B in BTC
The government’s Bitcoin wallets are making headlines, but the more revealing signal may be coming from traders under pressure. As 45,600 BTC flows toward exchanges, the $74,600 cost-basis level could help determine whether this pullback stays contained or turns into something deeper.
CryptoQuant linked Bitcoin price’s 7% pullback to highs with U.S. government transfers of 17,468 BTC worth $1.44 billion between October 6 and 8.
Short-term holders sent 45,600 BTC to exchanges in 24 hours, including 29,100 BTC sold at a loss, pointing to rising selling pressure.
Bitcoin’s $74,600 short-term holder realized price is the key level to watch. Holding above it preserves the early bull-market structure, while a break could deepen the correction.
Bitcoin price dropped nearly 7% off its latest high as U.S. government-associated crypto wallets transferred 17,468 BTC worth approximately $1.44 billion between October 6 and 8, 2026.
According to CryptoQuant’s research on October 9, the news came as short-term holders increased their selling pressure, sending 45,600 bitcoin to exchanges in the past 24 hours, as per CryptoQuant.
The most pressing question is whether Bitcoin price will absorb the selling pressure from these large wallets.
But the data itself does not confirm that the government wallets sold their bitcoin or that the $1.44 billion directly impacted Bitcoin price. And most importantly, the data shows signs of a stressed market.
Three-Day Bitcoin Transfer From U.S. Government Addresses
CryptoQuant tracked the U.S. government-associated wallets losing 569 BTC on October 6, then 4,632 BTC on October 7, and finally 12,267 BTC on October 8, with the last bulk transfer making up the majority of the three-day sum.
As previously mentioned, the transfer includes bitcoin associated with Seized Funds, specifically the Bitcoin from the Bitfinex hack in 2016. After the three-day transfer, CryptoQuant showed U.S. government-associated wallets holding about 174,481 bitcoin in seized funds.

Note that this represents only the amount in seized funds represented in CryptoQuant’s wallet set.
The difference between wallets and sales is a crucial nuance that impacts understanding of how U.S. government actions impacted the latest Bitcoin price drop. The value of the $1.44 billion represents the value of the coins moved, not the value of any sale.
Bitcoin Price Tested Again by Shorts – But Who Is Really Selling?
U.S. government addresses only represent a portion of the pressure on Bitcoin price following the short-term holder selling spree.
Looking at CryptoQuant’s 24-hour exchange flow chart, it becomes clear that short-term holders sold about 45,600 BTC in the last 24-hour cycle.
Of this, about 20,700 BTC represented profit-taking sellers. Meanwhile, about 24,900 BTC represented loss sellers.
The loss sellers represent short-term holders who moved their bitcoin into exchanges at a lower entry price than they originally bought at. It does not mean they sold immediately upon entry, but it does mean that their short position was not entirely profitable.
The unrealized profit analysis makes it apparent that some portion of the short-term holders who purchased around the latest bottom are already holding onto a profit. As those profits get squeezed, holders may decide to sell at a profit. Meanwhile, for Bitcoin price, this means that holders have a lower threshold for choosing to sell.
Paper losses and realized losses tell different stories in the Bitcoin market. A holder may sit on a losing position without selling. The loss becomes real only when they sell below their purchase price. As Bitcoin weakens, some short-term holders may move coins to exchanges to cut their exposure before losses grow.
Bitcoin Drops Below Key Support Level, What It Means for Crypto Markets
It also reported $487.07 million U.S. spot Bitcoin ETF outflows on October 7. It warned of a potential Bitcoin price drop to between $60,000 and $80,000 if support broke, rather than a certain drop to $60,000.

This price level and the $74,600 threshold represent the same general idea: the potential entry point for selling to begin.
However, they represent different types of averages. One suggests a simple technical level, while the other represents a more specific valuation based on the holder segment.
