MSTR Faces MSCI Test Amid Wall Street's Bullish Stance

While MSCI threatens $2.8 billion in outflows, Strategy’s less-discussed defenses include a $3.75 billion liquidity cushion for preferred dividends, STRC trading near par, and an MSTR stock valuation hovering around its Bitcoin net asset value.

Key Insights

  • MSTR stock faces up to $2.8 billion in potential index-driven selling if MSCI removes Strategy under its new rules.
  • Wall Street remains bullish, with Citi, Barclays and B. Riley raising price targets to $240, $175 and $195, respectively.
  • Strategy’s 848,517 BTC holdings, cash reserves and expanded $3 billion buyback program could help cushion MSCI-related selling pressure.

In late October 2026, Strategy (MSTR) found itself in the unusual position of a tug-of-war. On the one side, new MSCI index rules threaten roughly $2.8 billion of passive selling. On the other hand, Wall Street analysts have actually lifted their price targets.

As of Oct. 19, Strategy reported holding 848,517 BTC and $5.3 billion in cash, after using $193.1 million to repurchase its STRC preferred shares and buying another 267 Bitcoin.

The company also raised its share buyback program from $2.0 billion to $3.0 billion in capital, and the question remains whether this MSCI-driven selling will undermine a stock analysts value well above today’s levels.

Wall Street’s Unfazed Outlook on MSTR Stock

Despite the MSCI storm clouds, bank analysts still see a fundamentally optimistic outlook on MSTR stock.

Citi analysts raised their target to $240, Barclays to $175 and B. Riley to $195. These targets have trended upward over recent weeks, not down, underscoring continued confidence.

CryptoQuant CEO Ki Young Ju points out that “The most bullish stock by analyst sentiment is $MSTR, ” even as MSCI risk looms. In Ki’s view, the $2.8 billion figure is a “flow story” already priced into MSTR price, but what he feels is important is the balance sheet and Strategy’s NAV.

Roughly 1x market-cap-to-Bitcoin-NAV and with the STRC preferred shares trading at par, Strategy stock isn’t as richly valued as it once was, implying it would be able to absorb MSCI selling pressure.

MSCI Removal, $2.8B Outflow Risk

The MSCI indexes are set to exclude “non-operating” companies, and Strategy risks being categorized among them. The new rules will take effect post Nov. 30, with a final list of the affected names expected by Nov. 11.

JPMorgan estimated MSTR could see roughly $2.8 billion of index-driven selling if it is removed, which represented a significant fraction of outstanding floats in related funds.

Strategy’s own leadership, however, has downplayed the threat. Former CEO Michael Saylor told Bloomberg earlier that the affected index funds are “relatively small” compared to the company’s size, and called MSCI’s logic a “bad precedent.” CryptoQuant’s Ju concurs, stressing that the impact of MSCI is already priced in.

Valuation, Reserves and Dividend Coverage

Meanwhile, Strategy’s financial metrics give investors a pause to breathe. The stock now trades close to its net-asset backing. Market cap is about 1x bitcoin-NAV. The STRC preferred shares, which have dividend obligations, are trading at or near $100 par (in fact, closing just under $98 on Oct. 18).

Crucially, Strategy has amassed roughly $3.75 billion in cash and liquidity for these dividends. Their reserve covers several years’ worth of payments at the current BTC prices. In short, analysts argue that as long as bitcoin is around here, Strategy’s core business of holding Bitcoin should justify a higher stock price.

One popular technical signifier supports this view – the golden cross recently formed on MSTR’s stock chart, suggesting the stock could rebound if history were to repeat.

Market Reaction and Near-Term Outlook

Even with the MSCI cloud, MSTR stock has not been universally pummeled. Shares fell from a peak above $151 to about $137 in the week following the news, but have held up relatively well given the circumstances.

The expanded STRC buyback program, while ongoing, along with continued bitcoin accumulation, gives operational support, as Strategy added 267 BTC on Oct. 19 at an average cost in the low $80,000s, maintaining its position as the world’s largest public Bitcoin holder.

For more context, Block Insider noted that Strategy’s shift into buybacks has significantly cut STRC volatility down to roughly 9% over 30 days, comparable to big U.S. ETFs – indicating a stabilization in its capital structure. Ultimately, the stock’s direction will depend on which narrative dominates.

If the banks are right and that MSCI selling is “priced in,” then MSTR stock could find a floor around its NAV and resume any uptrend. If broad index funds were to dump shares, it could threaten the stock even as fundamentals remain unchanged.

For now, Strategy’s ample cash reserves, continued buybacks, and management stance appear to be reinforcing confidence.
