US CPI at 3.7% Breaks 5-Month Record, But Bitcoin Falls To $81,000
US inflation just delivered an unexpected surprise, sending the dollar higher and Bitcoin lower. The next support test could determine BTC’s direction.
US inflation just delivered an unexpected surprise, sending the dollar higher and Bitcoin lower. The next support test could determine BTC’s direction.

US inflation reaccelerated in September, and Bitcoin slipped below $82,000 within hours of the release. The Consumer Price Index rose 3.7% year-on-year, according to data published on Wednesday.
The dollar, Bitcoin's price structure and holder behavior now point to where pressure is building.
US CPI came in at 3.7% for September, above the 3.6% forecast and much higher than August's 3.4%. It is the highest reading since May's 4.2%. This is also the first time in over five months that CPI has beaten expectations.
The last upside surprise came in April, when inflation printed 3.8% against a 3.7% forecast.

Markets had grown used to inflation matching or undershooting forecasts. A beat breaks that pattern and challenges the narrative of steady disinflation. It raises the odds of a firmer Federal Reserve, with less room for rate cuts. Tighter policy expectations tend to lift the dollar and Treasury yields, which weigh on risk assets such as Bitcoin.
Inflation had cooled for months after peaking at 4.2% in May, which kept rate-cut hopes alive. September's jump challenges those hopes. Sticky price pressures also complicate the Fed's path ahead. Another hot print could harden the central bank's stance at its next meeting.
The higher CPI proved a blessing for the US Dollar Index (DXY), which jumped 0.67% to 102.9. That is its largest single-day rise in almost a month.
The move pushed DXY above the 2.618 Fibonacci extension at 102.0. The index has now climbed from its September low near 98.5. The next resistance sits at the 3.618 extension, around 103.3.

A stronger dollar makes dollar-priced assets costlier for global buyers. Bitcoin has often struggled when DXY rallies sharply within a day. Rising yields typically accompany such moves, adding pressure on non-yielding assets like Bitcoin and gold.
Bitcoin, on the other hand, took a hit, falling to $81,837 at the moment. It was rejected near $84,137 earlier in the session.
However, it continues to hold the $81,200 line as support, which forms the base of its parabolic pattern. BTC has built three consecutive bases since July, with Base 3 capped by resistance near $86,663.

A breakout from this structure would open the path toward $100,000. A loss of support would put that setup in doubt. The $100,000 target is a projection from the pattern, not a guarantee.
Glassnode data shows one crucial Bitcoin cohort may have priced in this risk. Long-term holders' net position change has dropped to roughly negative 3,500 BTC. It stood near 25,000 BTC in late September.
The metric tracks the monthly net change in coins held by long-term holders. A negative reading means they are distributing more than accumulating.

Their buying momentum slowed and has now turned into selling momentum. This shift from accumulation to distribution is a clean bearish signal. It is the first negative reading since early September.
This group often steadies price during dips. Their retreat removes a key source of demand just as the dollar strengthens.
For now, the key level to watch beyond $81,200 is $80,363. Coinglass data shows nearly $1 billion in cumulative long liquidations clustered there. If BTC falls below this line, collective long liquidations could trigger a larger drawdown.

Bulls must defend $81,200 to keep the parabolic base intact.
