Key Insights
- Zcash price has jumped 193% in three months, despite retreating from its $1,697 all-time high.
- ETF developments and NU7 are adding fresh catalysts, with the network testing 25-second blocks and new institutional products targeting ZEC exposure.
- The rally is extending beyond the chart, as ZEC outperforms Bitcoin and gains greater attention across the ETF and mining markets.
Zcash price is entering October from a much different position than it held three months ago. ZEC has gained 193% over that period, despite having retreated from its Sept. 26 all-time high of $1,698.
On Oct. 6, 2026, the rally picked up another layer of attention as the Winklevoss group filed a preliminary registration statement for a proposed spot Zcash ETF, while Zcash's NU7 upgrade continued testing on the public network.
TradingView showed ZEC around $1,335.40 on Oct. 7, up 3.14% over 24 hours but still down 7% over the previous week.
The token remained well below its record near $1,698, which leaves the current Zcash price action as less of another vertical breakout, and more of a test of whether the market can find support after an unusual advance.
Zcash Price Finds a Different Kind of Market
The retreat from the record has been significant, but not enough to undo the large movement.
Zcash price remains about 34% higher over the past month, according to TradingView, despite the sharp pullback from September's peak.
The market data also shows why the $1,300 area has become an important reference point. Several current technical setups are watching the 1,300-1,400 region as support following the move into the $1,600s.
The next phase is less about another immediate surge, and more about what happens around the levels established during the correction.
The difference is because ZEC has already delivered the kind of move that can reset expectations quickly.
A 193% three-month gain presents a higher hurdle for every fresh rally. The market needs to absorb those gains without undoing the structure established during the advance.
Institutional Channel Is Getting Crowded
The biggest fundamental development arrived from the US securities market. Winklevoss Asset Services filed a preliminary S-1 with the Securities and Exchange Commission on Oct. 6 for the Winklevoss Zcash ETF.
The proposed fund would hold ZEC directly, use Gemini Trust Company as custodian, and seek a Nasdaq listing under the ticker WINK. The proposed annual sponsor fee is 0.25%.
The filing also says Winklevoss Capital Fund, through affiliates, has expressed interest in purchasing up to $100 million of shares. Crucially, the filing describes that interest as nonbinding. The registration statement is preliminary, and does not mean the ETF has been approved.
The filing would add another issuer to an increasingly active market. The Block reported that Grayscale's ZCSH is currently the only live US spot Zcash ETF, with Bitwise also having filed for a Zcash fund. Grayscale's product had attracted more than $233 million in inflows in less than a month after its August launch.
Bitwise has also placed ZEC inside its broader institutional product universe. Its Sept. 29 rebalance added Zcash to the Bitwise 10 Large Cap Crypto Index with a 1.07% weighting.
For the ZEC crypto price, this changes the backdrop, but not the risks. The SEC filing itself warns that ZEC can be highly volatile, and that large holders, trading activity, liquidity, and changes in adoption can materially affect its market price.
NU7 Gives the Rally Another Variable
Zcash activated NU7 on the public testnet at block 4,465,026 on Oct. 4, two days before the expected Oct. 6 timing.
The upgrade cuts the target block interval from 75 seconds to 25 seconds. Developers are using the testnet to evaluate the change before a planned mainnet rollout, with a review expected on Oct. 20, and Nov. 5 the reported target date.
The shorter block interval is not the only change. NU7 also introduces a Network Sustainability Mechanism that redirects part of transaction fees towards future mining rewards.
The testnet phase therefore gives developers and network participants a live environment in which to assess several consensus changes before mainnet activation. That technical backdrop comes while the economics around Zcash mining have also changed.
Block Insider reported that Zcash has joined a small group of altcoins substantially outperforming Bitcoin, with Glassnode data showing ZEC's relative return to be 14 times that of Bitcoin since Bitcoin's all-time high. Only nine of the top 50 altcoins beat Bitcoin over that measurement period. Another Block Insider report focused on Zcash's mining economics, a theme which also appears in contemporaneous research citing Grayscale.
Zcash mining has been generating roughly twice the revenue per machine and about four times the revenue per megawatt-hour of comparable Bitcoin mining under the cited estimates, whereas Zcash hashrate has risen more than 2.5 times in 2026.
That does not guarantee another leg higher for the Zcash price. But it does explain why the current market is being watched from more than one angle.
