Key Insights

  • Ethereum’s new Strawmap puts quantum safety higher than it was in 2023.
  • Buterin’s new plan gives stronger focus to privacy tools and censorship resistance.
  • Ethereum could eventually explore leanISA or RISC-V instead of the EVM.

Ethereum is changing the order of its long-term priorities. Co-founder Vitalik Buterin’s updated roadmap now puts quantum safety, privacy and post-quantum scaling closer to the center of development, while older plans have been pushed back or replaced as the network prepares for a more demanding future.

Buterin’s New “Strawmap” Changes Ethereum’s Priorities

In a recent tweet post Buterin shared an updated version of what he calls the “Strawmap.”

The new plan still shares many goals with Ethereum’s 2023 roadmap, but several priorities have changed. The biggest shift is the stronger focus on preparing Ethereum for quantum computers and building better privacy and scaling tools.

Some older ideas have also been moved down the list. Verifiable Delay Functions (VDFs) and several planned EVM upgrades now have lower priority. Verkle trees have also been dropped in favor of newer approaches, while the old state expiry plan has been replaced by a different state model.

The change shows that Ethereum is not simply following its old development plan. Researchers are changing the roadmap as new technology and new risks become clearer.

Quantum Safety Moves to the Front

One of the biggest concerns in the new plan is the future threat from quantum computers. Ethereum currently uses digital signatures to approve transactions. A powerful enough quantum computer could eventually break the mathematical systems behind those signatures.

That is why Buterin now places quantum safety much higher on the roadmap.

The challenge is not only protecting users from future attacks. Ethereum also needs to make the network quantum-safe without making transactions too large or expensive.

This is where leanSPHINCS and zkzk frames become important.

LeanSPHINCS uses hash based signatures that are designed to remain secure against quantum attacks. But post-quantum signatures can require more data than the signatures Ethereum uses today. That creates a scaling problem.

zkzk Frames Could Help Keep Fees Low

Buterin’s zkzk frames idea is designed to address that problem. Instead of putting every large signature directly into a block, the system could combine many signatures into a smaller proof.

This could reduce the amount of data that Ethereum needs to process while still keeping the network secure. The idea connects two major goals in the Strawmap: quantum protection and scaling.

Buterin is also looking at other ways to make Ethereum more efficient. The new roadmap gives greater importance to STARKs, recursive proofs and formal verification, with AI tools expected to help researchers check complex parts of the system.

Privacy Is Also Getting More Attention

Privacy is another major addition to the new roadmap. The Strawmap includes ideas such as keyed nonces, recent roots, lean privacy pools and wormholes. Parts of the FOCIL plan are also included.

These tools are aimed at making transactions harder to link to individual users while helping Ethereum remain resistant to censorship. This is a notable change from the 2023 roadmap, where privacy did not receive the same level of attention.

Buterin said the long-term goal is clear: “Ethereum will put users' privacy first.”

Could Ethereum Move Beyond EVM?

The Strawmap also leaves the door open for a major change to Ethereum’s basic technology. Buterin suggested that Ethereum could eventually expose a different instruction set instead of relying so heavily on the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM).

Two possible options are leanISA and RISC-V.

These systems are simpler and more modern than the EVM. One possible future is for the EVM to become an extra layer running on top of another system rather than remaining a core part of Ethereum’s base design.

Finally, Buterin summed up the direction clearly by saying that:

“Ethereum will be quantum-safe. Ethereum will put users' privacy first. Ethereum will be secure. Ethereum will be censorship-resistant. Ethereum will be highly performant and scalable.”
