Quick Take:

  • The crypto market ended October 2026 near $2.6 trillion in total value, about 39% below its October 2025 peak, after the Binance hack knocked roughly $100 billion off it in two days.
  • Bitcoin price fell 7.2% in October, from a $83,576 close on 30 September to $77,521 on 31 October. Ether lost 16% and Solana 19%.
  • Hackers took $6.48 billion across 56 incidents in October, more than eight times September's $766 million, according to PeckShield, with Binance's $6.3 billion breach accounting for almost all of it.
  • The Fed held rates at 3.75% to 4.00% on 28 October, and crypto venture funding came in at $1.65 billion, most of it Kalshi's $1 billion round.

October 2026 was the month the crypto market stopped drifting and started falling. Total crypto market cap, which sat close to $2.7 trillion in the days before the Binance hack, dropped below $2.6 trillion by 31 October, according to CoinMarketCap data, leaving the market about 39% below its October 2025 peak of nearly $4.3 trillion. Bitcoin price lost 7.2% in the month. Ethereum price lost 16%. Solana price lost 19%.

That ranking tells the story. Bitcoin was the least bad asset in a month that had a Fed hold, a record exchange theft, a whale dumping Solana by the hundred million, and $6.48 billion in total hack losses. So why was the crypto market down in October? Mostly because of one night in Binance's hot wallets, and partly because the market had already run out of buyers before that.

Bitcoin Price: A Slow Leak Before the Break

Bitcoin price started October at $83,576, according to CoinGecko's daily closes, and reached its monthly high of $86,490 on 4 October. From there it leaked. BTC traded between $80,000 and $84,000 for three weeks, with daily spot volume mostly in the $15 billion to $35 billion range and no attempt at a new high.

The Fed did not help or hurt much. The 28 October decision kept the target range at 3.75% to 4.00%, as expected, and Bitcoin closed that day at $81,274. Then came 29 October. Binance confirmed an attacker had drained about $6.3 billion from its hot wallets across nine chains, and BTC closed at $77,839, down 4.2% in a day. Volume hit $49 billion on 31 October, the busiest session of the month, as Bitcoin closed October at $77,521.

Notably, Bitcoin never broke the level that mattered. The $77,140 Trader Realized Price, the average cost of coins that last moved one to three months ago, held through the hack week, which is one reason November opened with a bounce rather than a slide.

The Hacks: $6.48 Billion in 31 Days

October's security bill was the largest for any month on record. PeckShield counted 56 major incidents and about $6.48 billion in losses, against $766 million in September, a rise of roughly 745%. Cumulative 2026 losses through 31 October reached about $8.6 billion, with the ten biggest incidents making up 92% of that.

Binance's breach on 29 October accounts for about $6.3 billion of the October total, more than four times the previous record, Bybit's $1.5 billion in February 2025. Tether and Circle froze about $2.8 billion in stablecoins within an hour and around $3 billion in total, according to PeckShield, and Binance said it would cover all user losses from its SAFU fund. Investigators have pointed to North Korea, which Binance has not confirmed.

It was not the only one. Bitget lost about $387 million, the second-largest incident of the year, and Liquid Network about $320 million, the third, though Liquid has since recovered roughly $285 million. The month closed with Mercado Bitcoin, Brazil's largest exchange, confirming a breach that Hypernative estimated at over $40 million, and an EU entity losing $106 million from exchange accounts on 1 November.

Thus the pattern of October's damage: exchanges, not protocols. Every one of the five largest incidents hit a centralised venue or a custodial account. That is a different risk profile from the DeFi exploits of 2022 and 2023, and it is the one that moves retail money off exchanges fastest.

Altcoins Fell Harder Than Bitcoin

Bitcoin's 7.2% drop looks mild beside the rest of the top ten. Ether closed September at $2,684.71 and October at $2,254.13, a 16% fall, according to CoinGecko, with its market cap shrinking from $327 billion to $274 billion. Solana went from $118.04 to $95.42, down 19.2%, losing the $100 level in late October and not recovering it.

SOL had its own seller. A single unlabelled wallet deposited 1.49 million SOL, about $149 million, to exchanges in the ten days to 2 November, according to Lookonchain, and the Binance attacker sold a further $96 million of stolen SOL. Ether's problem was more general: the stablecoin outflows after the hack drained the buying power that had supported it in September.

In fact, Bitcoin dominance rose through the month as a result, ending near 58%, according to CoinGecko. That is what a risk-off October looks like in crypto: money does not leave Bitcoin for altcoins, it leaves altcoins for Bitcoin and stablecoins, and some of it leaves altogether.

Funding Held Up, on One Deal

Venture money was the one line that went up. Crypto startups raised $1.65 billion in October, more than double September, according to CryptoRank. Strip out Kalshi's $1 billion round at a $40 billion valuation, though, and the rest of the market raised $651 million, in line with September's $665 million. Whop's $200 million, Spiko's $90 million and PhotonPay's $40 million made up most of the remainder.

What November Needs

Bitcoin price traded at $80,019 at 12:40 UTC on 5 November, up 2.3% in 24 hours and back above the level it lost in the hack, according to CoinGecko, with total market cap at $2.75 trillion. Stablecoin supply is growing again after the post-hack dip, which a CryptoQuant analyst reads as the start of a bullish turn.

In the bullish scenario, Bitcoin holds $80,000 through Friday's US jobs report and the 10 November CPI print, the stolen Binance coins stay parked, and the $82,500 to $85,000 zone where October's rally stalled gets its retest. Polymarket traders put a 74.5% chance on $82,500 in November, according to odds displayed by CoinGecko.

That said, in a bearish scenario, a hot CPI or the first movement of the 18,270 stolen BTC pushes price back through $77,140, and October's slow leak becomes November's trend. Either way, the month ahead will be judged on one thing October failed: whether the market can go a full four weeks without a nine-figure theft.
