Sui Just Raised L1 Throughput Bar, Can Price Follow?
Sui just posted a 40.6 million TPS record, but the SUI price moved lower. The unusual divergence puts the network’s biggest speed test against a market that seems unimpressed.
Sui just posted a 40.6 million TPS record, but the SUI price moved lower. The unusual divergence puts the network’s biggest speed test against a market that seems unimpressed.

SUI price was still under pressure on October 7, even as Sui Network announced a 40,614,180 transactions-per-second throughput record at its Basecamp event in Singapore.
The result, achieved through Sui tunnels and settled to Sui mainnet, more than doubled the network’s 20 million TPS test target and surpassed its July record of 6,086,766 TPS.
That creates an unusual market split. Sui crypto has just produced one of its strongest technical demonstrations, but the token has not immediately reflected it.
Coinmarketcap data showed SUI around $1.12 on October 7, down 5.44% over 24 hours, with a market capitalization of about $4.64 billion and $775.7 million in trading volume.
The obvious question is whether the network milestone can eventually matter more to the SUI price than the day’s broader selling pressure.
The 40.6 million figure needs to be taken with a grain of salt. It did not represent a demonstration of 40.6 million ordinary transactions each second being executed directly by the Sui base layer.
The throughput came from Sui tunnels, programmable off-chain state and payment channels that settle to Sui mainnet when they are closed.
Every closed tunnel is mutually cosigned and can be independently verified on-chain.
That architecture is the more important part of the announcement. Sui introduced tunnels during its previous record-setting demonstration on July 4.
The latest test pushed throughput to more than six times the earlier 6,086,766 TPS record. More than 10,000 tunnels were also opened on Sui mainnet within seconds during the latest demonstration, according to the Sui Foundation.
Sui’s official X account shared the milestone, while Sweep also highlighted the performance record on X as the result circulated through the market.
For the SUI price, however, a stress test remains a technical data point. It does not by itself establish sustained user demand, fee growth, or token appreciation.
The design is aimed at an environment where transactions could happen far more frequently than human users can generate them.
The Sui Foundation said the Basecamp test was built around the capacity demands of AI agents and machine commerce.
During the demonstration, users and AI agents opened more than 10,000 tunnels for applications ranging from chat to games and payments.
The activity inside those channels occurred off-chain and without gas fees before final settlement on Sui.
Adeniyi Abiodun, Mysten Labs’ chief product officer and co-founder, described the intended role of the blockchain this way:
“In an agentic economy, Sui doesn't need to process every interaction. It needs to be the trust layer for all of them.”
He compared Sui with a court that sets rules and handles final settlement while agents transact through tunnels.
That distinction gives the SUI price story more nuance. The record is less about proving that a conventional blockchain can execute tens of millions of transactions directly onchain and more about demonstrating how Sui can provide settlement and verification for very high volumes of off-chain activity.
At roughly $1.12, the SUI crypto remained below its October 6 close of $1.18, while its October 7 market capitalization was around $4.64 billion. Coinmarketcap also recorded an intraday range between $1.12 and $1.20.
The SUI price therefore moved in the opposite direction from the network headline during the session.

That does not invalidate the milestone. It simply shows that infrastructure metrics and asset prices operate on different timelines.
A record test can establish capacity. It cannot establish that the market has already assigned additional value to that capacity.
The Sui Foundation says CertiK verified the result in real time, while the auditor will examine the associated proofs, execution logs, journals, and supporting evidence before publishing a fuller report.
The altcoin sector is seeing similar attention on infrastructure. Block Insider reported on October 7 that Zcash’s NU7 upgrade was being tested on its public testnet, including a proposed reduction in the target block interval from 75 seconds to 25 seconds.
